Cardiff Meeting 1st April PDF Print E-mail

We had a great turnout for this meeting of around 15 people or so.  I hope everyone had a good time and lets hope that the next meeting has a similar turn out.  Some people who have tried to find us in the past but had difficulty figuring out who we were made it as did a few long time lurkers, which is good to see.  We were rather hard to miss for once.  The LUG isn't a meeting of linux gurus talking about the latest kernel or similar, we're here for all linux users of any level.  There were many topics of discussion and I'm quite sure I've missed plenty of things, so here is a small flavour of what was talked about last night.

Solving economy with SQL.  One well placed SQL query should do the trick so I'm informed.  Anyone got root to the Bank of England database?

Employment in IT (and getting work via LUG) a few people who've been out of work due to the current economic issues have gotten jobs again or are at least looking like they might be doing a bit better sooner.  Also there was one chap who spoke positively of the number of jobs he's got through LUGs.  Also there was some discussion about using open source software for running an IT business, specifically CRM and Helpdesk software.

There was quite a lot of talk about hardware hacking, partly because of the attendance of some of the Cardiff Geeks [n.e.r.d] group.  This isn't a complete list but there were talks about the usage of beagle boards, using Linksys wrt54g's to create a mesh using openwrt or similar free/open source firmware, a couple of circuit bending demos as well as a Atari Punk Console demo and finally Chris (one of the many) was discussing gumstixs, specifically he wants to use one to control a camera attached to a atmospheric ballon.

On that note, if anyone does know of a UK supplier for Gumstix?  Chris was mentioning that there didn't seem to be one and he was struggling to get hold of someone to buy one off in the UK.  Can anyone help?  Does anyone know of any alternatives?

Chris S (ianto of Ubuntu-cym) suggested we should try and get some photos of the meeting.  My phone lacks a decent camera, so maybe there are some photo-geeks on the list who could oblige next month?  Hopefully that won't put anyone off attending.

The next SWLUG meeting is in Carmarthen on the 21st of April.  The technical meeting is on the 26th of April.  The next Cardiff meeting is on the 6th of May.
